Tuesday, 17 February 2009Find out more about Metrolink in South Manchester

People in South Manchester can find out more about the project to build a new Metrolink line to Chorlton at two special information events this month.

Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE) and MPact-Thales - the consortium building the new tram line - are holding exhibitions at:

- Kings Road Primary School, Old Trafford, on Tuesday 24 February from 6pm to 8pm

- Chorlton Library, Manchester Road, on Thursday 5 March from 5.30pm to 8pm

Some clearance work to remove overgrown vegetation along the route took place late last year and transport bosses are preparing to carry out more similar work over the next few weeks.

Philip Purdy, GMPTE's Metrolink Director, said: "2009 is going to be an exciting time for Metrolink as work really starts to take place on the ground.

"This month we'll be continuing the vegetation clearance we started last year along the length of the route in preparation for main construction work.

"We are committed to keeping in touch with local residents and businesses as the Metrolink line takes shape.

"We've just distributed nearly 9,000 copies of our newsletter 'The Link' to people who live along the route, and these information events will be the first of many.

"I hope people take the opportunity to come along and find out more about the plans."

GMPTE is overseeing a £600 million expansion that will see the Metrolink network nearly double in size. The train line through Chorlton closed to passengers more than 40 years ago in 1967 but will be revitalised as part of the project.

New Metrolink lines will also be built to Oldham and Rochdale, East Manchester and Droylsden, and to the new MediaCityUK development in Salford Quays.

The South Manchester Metrolink line will leave the Altrincham line just after the Trafford Bar stop. New Metrolink stops will be built at Firswood, Chorlton and St Werburgh's Road. Trams are due to begin running to Chorlton in spring 2011.

Work will also start later this month to construct a work compound on the site of the new tram depot in Old Trafford. Main construction work is due to start in the spring.

Transport bosses have pledged to plant more trees than are removed as part of the project. They are also working closely with Natural England to protect wildlife along the new route.

More information about the Metrolink expansion - including 'The Link' newsletter - is available at www.gmpte.com/futuremetrolink or by calling 0161 244 1555 (9am to 4pm, Monday to Friday).
