Monday, 18 May 2009Weekend closure of Droylsden Market Street

Market Street in Droylsden will be closed for a weekend later this month, as part of essential work to bring Metrolink to Tameside.

GMPTE (Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive) is overseeing a £600m expansion of the Metrolink network which will take trams from East Manchester to Droylsden by spring 2012.

A temporary one-way system has been operating on Market Street while utilities are diverted to make way for the new tram line. Work must now be done to lay several electricity ducts across Market Street and connect them with sub-stations.

For operational and health and safety reasons, Market Street will have to be closed at its junction with Manchester Road from 7am on Saturday 30 May to midnight on Sunday 31 May 2009.

Traffic will be diverted via Manchester Road, Manor Road and Greenside Lane, and vice versa. The diversions will be signposted. GMPTE is writing to residents and businesses about the closure and holding a drop-in session next week.

Philip Purdy, GMPTE's Metrolink Director, said: "The decision to close Market Street for the weekend hasn't been taken lightly - there's simply no other way to do this work safely - but the contractor has agreed to a condensed schedule of work that will mean one closure rather than several.

"We will be sending letters to local businesses and residents to let them know what's happening and diversion signs will be put up for drivers.

"We're also holding a drop-in event in the week leading up to the closure, where people can find out more about the project as a whole, and I'd encourage people to come along and speak to the team."

The drop-in event will be held at Droylsden Library, on Tuesday 26 May, from 2.30pm to 7.30pm.

Officials from GMPTE and MPact-Thales - the consortium appointed to design, build and maintain the 3.9-mile extension to Droylsden - will be on hand to chat with members of the public.

There will also be drop-in events at St Cross Church Parish Centre on Wednesday 3 June, from 5.30pm to 7.30pm, and St Anne's Primary School in East Manchester, on Tuesday 9 June, from 5pm to 8pm.
