Wednesday, 22 April 2009Construction work starts on Droylsden's Metrolink line
The first stages of Metrolink construction work in Droylsden town centre will begin early next month, as transport bosses pave the way for tram tracks along Manchester Road.
Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE) is overseeing a £600m expansion of the Metrolink network which will take trams from East Manchester to Droylsden by spring 2012.
The arrival of a piling rig near to Droylsden Library will signal the start of main construction work, with concrete retaining walls being built to help widen Manchester Road and create a new footbridge in readiness for the new Metrolink line.
Work to divert utilities along Market Street began earlier this year and is running to schedule.
GMPTE's Metrolink Director, Philip Purdy said: "We've carried out a lot of work so far in Droylsden to get ready for this main construction work - and we're now in a position to start building the foundations of the new lines.
"Our work on Manchester Road will take place for most of this year, along with the utility diversions, but each day brings us a step closer to the sight of trams running to Droylsden.
"We'll continue to keep people and businesses up to speed as the project develops."
There will be temporary traffic lights on Manchester Road between the Jolly Carter pub and Water Lane for the next two to three months as United Utilities move manholes.
The MPact-Thales consortium has been appointed to design, build and maintain the 3.9-mile extension to Droylsden, along with new lines to Oldham and Rochdale, Chorlton in South Manchester and MediaCityUK in Salford.
Once complete, trams will run to and from Droylsden every six minutes.
