Travel Training

Travel is part and parcel of everyday life, and the ability to travel is something that most people take for granted. For some people, however, independent travel is a real challenge, and lack of travel opportunities can limit a person's access to social, employment and health opportunities.

Public transport is becoming more accessible and easier to use but sometimes people need the skills and confidence to make the most of these improvements. Travel training teaches young people and adults who need additional help or support to make journeys confidently and safely on their own using public transport.

The term 'travel training' can include a wide range of help and support. Some people need short-term help to familiarise them with how public transport works in their area and to give them the confidence to use it alone, whereas others need a one-to-one personalised training programme that might take place over a period of weeks or months.

Following an increasing number of enquiries for advice about travel training from many different organisations including schools and colleges, voluntary organisations, Social Services and health related agencies we produced good practice guidance on travel training, which is aimed at everyone who is interested in travel training whether setting up a scheme from scratch or wanting to develop and improve an existing scheme. It provides step-by-step guidance to setting up and running a scheme, with examples of what has been carried out successfully elsewhere.
