Transport chiefs have announced the appointment of David Leather as Interim Director General at GMPTE. Mr Leather will be heading up an organisation with ambitious plans for improving public transport in Greater Manchester - including delivering the expansion of the Metrolink light rail network, which is set to double in size following the recent confirmation of government funding.
The appointment was announced at Friday's meeting of Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority. Chair, Councillor Roger Jones, said: "We are very pleased to have David on board.
"We have an ambitious agenda to implement our vision for public transport and believe that David will bring a wealth of valuable experience and qualities to the organisation. I look forward to working with him in delivering improved services to the travelling public."
Mr Leather said: "I'm delighted to be joining GMPTE. Greater Manchester has a reputation for setting the transport agenda and I look forward to seeing that continue as we work to deliver innovative integrated transport solutions for our local communities."
42-year-old Mr Leather - who is a partner at Ernst & Young LLP - returns to Manchester from his post as Finance Director of the Olympic Delivery Authority, where he has been on secondment for the last year. Prior to that, he was the Finance Director of Manchester Airport and previously the Deputy Chief Executive and Finance Director of Manchester 2002, the Commonwealth Games organisation.
The Authority also thanked GMPTE's Deputy Director General, Geoff Inkskip, for his service to public transport in Greater Manchester over the last 14 years. Mr Inskip has been Acting Director General for the last nine months and is leaving GMPTE to take up the post of Chief Executive at Centro-PTA, the West Midlands passenger transport authority.
GMPTE's Director General, Chris Mulligan, is currently absent due to long-term sickness.
