Friday, 07 December 2007Low and behold - £1 million for new buses in Eccles
Salford bus passengers are now benefiting from a fleet of brand new low-floor buses on a number of routes in Eccles.
Bus operator Arriva has invested £1 million in 10 new vehicles for its 13 services in the area. All 13 services are funded by Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority (GMPTA).
Chair of GMPTA, Councillor Roger Jones, welcomed the improvements at today's launch saying: "The new buses will make it much easier and quicker for everyone to get on and off at their stops. Public transport should be accessible to everyone and I think this will make a real difference for passengers.
"Improvements like this can make a journey a lot easier. I think everyone will appreciate these new vehicles - particularly people with pushchairs, wheelchair users, or those who may be a little unsteady on their feet.
"Following the launch we had a review meeting with Arriva to discuss the services in the area. I am encouraged by this investment and hope that we can continue to work in partnership with them with a view to improving their services further."
Phil Stone, managing director for Arriva North West and Wales, said: "In partnership with the local authority, we are constantly looking at ways to improve the service we provide. In this case, we have invested almost £1 million to improve services in Eccles and we hope people will enjoy using the new buses.
"Not only are they modern, accessible and environmentally friendly, they will also help us to run an even more reliable service."
The new low-floor buses will run on the following routes: 55, 61, 62, 63, 64, 65, 69, 70, 71, 73, 74, 75 and 293.
