Monday, 15 September 2008PA system next arrival at Walkden station
Passengers waiting for a train at Walkden station will soon be able to find out if it is running on time.
Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority (GMPTA) has agreed to jointly fund a new public address system at the station with Northern Rail.
Improvements will also be made to the ticket office communications systems at Walkden, Swinton, Daisy Hill and Moorside stations so that passengers with hearing difficulties can book tickets more easily.
Councillor Ian Macdonald, GMPTA's Salford spokesperson, said: "The platforms at Walkden aren't that near the ticket office so passengers can be a bit cut off while they're waiting for a train.
"There's always the risk that you'll miss your train if you go to find out if it's running late so I'm pleased that ticket office staff will be able to use the new public address system to make announcements on the platforms.
"I'm sure passengers with hearing difficulties will also appreciate the improvements we're making in the ticket offices at stations along the line."
GMPTA's Policy Committee has agreed to provide £3,500 for the projects. Councillor Keith Whitmore, Chair of the Committee, said: "Improving public transport isn't always about making massive investments.
"Sometimes small projects like these can make a big difference to passengers. I'm sure the new public address system at Walkden, and the upgrades to the ticket office communications systems, will help to improve people's experiences of using public transport."
Iryna Terlecky, Northern Rail's Area Director, said: "Northern is committed to improving facilities and services for passengers and the new public address system at Walkden is a perfect example of how working in partnership can deliver real benefits for our customers."
