Wednesday, 01 July 2009New bridge gives Metrolink works a real lift

A new footbridge was lifted into place in Droylsden at the weekend as part of the project to bring Metrolink to the town centre.

GMPTE is overseeing a £600 million expansion of the Metrolink network that will see trams running to Droylsden by spring 2012.

On Sunday, a crane lifted the new footbridge into place on land near to Droylsden Library on Manchester Road.

The new bridge has been installed as part of the ongoing work to widen Manchester Road - which trams will eventually run down.

Philip Purdy, GMPTE's Metrolink Director, said: "This was an important part of our work on Manchester Road and it went really well. The bridge arrived at 7am and was in place by 10am, so it was quite a quick turn around.

"We are making good progress on the East Manchester line. There is a lot of work going on in Droylsden right now, but we are on schedule and we hope to reopen Market Street to two-way traffic in August."

Bryan Diggins, MPact-Thales Project Director, said: "Installing this bridge on time has been key to the construction of the Metrolink line to Droylsden, so it's excellent news that this phase has run so smoothly.

"Building the Metrolink line along the busy route from Manchester to Droylsden is a challenging job but work at all the key points is going well."

Along with the East Manchester line, work is also taking place on new lines to Chorlton, Oldham and Rochdale and MediaCityUK in Salford.
